The night of July 25th, 2024, was one the citizens of Missoula County won’t soon forget. The windstorm and aftermath generated over 150 calls for the Missoula Rural Fire District in a very short span of time. Several other requests for service were generated in the subsequent days. The wind event came on the heels of a couple of wildland fires that threatened homes and our community. Our agency, along with multiple others, worked tirelessly to ensure no structures were lost by the Butler Creek Fire nor the Miller Peak Fire. The efforts of our crews and mutual-aid partners are a testament to their skill, dedication, and preparedness. Miraculously, no injuries to firefighters nor the public were reported as a result of any of the forementioned events. This is likely attributable to the cooperation of the public who trusted our firefighters enough to evacuate their homes when asked to do so or sheltered in place as requested during these events.
For days after the wind event and major wildland fires, our crews were the recipients of several thank you cards, cookies, and other treats. Our staff felt the love and appreciation of the community.
