MRFD is staffed by three types of Firefighters/EMTs:
- 53 Career firefighter/EMTs who work full-time for the Missoula Rural Fire District.
- Up to 15 “Resident” firefighters who are typically enrolled in a Fire Science program at the University of Montana. Residents live at a fire station and serve on 12-hour shifts, most often in the evening. Residents are trained in both firefighting and emergency medical response and work under the supervision of a career firefighter.
- Volunteer firefighters who are members of the community. In addition to attending regular training sessions, volunteers commit to serving a minimum of 24 hours in a station every month.
